I love how you connect such seemingly disparate things - a holy mushroom, an ancient mystic, a poem, a bog, a library. the bit about about carrot baubles gave me a good giggle too ☺️
Ah thank you, Morgan 🙏 sticking with mushrooms, I think the way I often find myself writing is a bit like how mushrooms pop up — they are the topics and my work is to trace the underground filaments that connect them. It’s fun anyway! Thank you for reading ✨
I loved your references to Hildegard. So beautiful. I read your article in Resurgence and as I too am looking to publish a book, thought I might glean something from your journey. I’m at the stage of looking for an agent. I think they are finding my book more difficult to see a path for than yours, but my hope is a light inside me, a burning flame somewhere between my heart and my throat. Meanwhile I’m studying Idries Shah. I think he would say that it is the lower self that needs stabilising in order to be in a position to open up higher faculties. Anyway, that is my mission.
Hello Charles. Thank you for your comment, and for supporting my work too. I hope you might find something useful, enjoyable, and/or insightful here. I will be sharing what I learn of the publishing journey, so feel free to ask questions and if I can help I will. I think the journey is probably necessarily unique for each person, but I feel that your light that resides "somewhere between my heart and my throat" will help greatly on that journey. Being curious about the light that others carry, and how your own work acknowledges this -- e.g. why are you the one to write this? why now? why might people care? -- might be a sweet spot to explore in terms of finding a home for it out in the world. For now, wishing you clarity and joy in your writing. More soon. Thanks again, Elizabeth
Thanks Elizabeth for your thoughts. Just one question at this point. What made you choose sub stack over other outlets for your newsletters and are you happy with it? I might do the same when I get myself organised. I am already following one agent on it, not that he is going to take me on, but he did describe mine as a fine proposal so I feel I am on the right lines.
Hi Charles. Sorry, I've just seen your message. I chose Substack because it seemed to be the only platform that offered what I wanted -- a space to write, and to invite others to read my writing, without having to think about the tech side of it. It also seemed to be geared to writing and writers, rather than any other form of content (though I think that has changed). I think there is a good community of people here, and good writing, though I do not engage with it as much as I could because there is just not enough time! But yes, I am generally happy with the platform -- it is easy to use, and has all the functionality I want (which is not much). I'm sure you'll find the writers, readers, and topics you're interested in here -- there are all kinds of people writing about all kinds of things. Enjoy exploring Substack!

Tracing underground filaments… gorgeous. 🙌🏼

Thanks for that, Elizabeth. I’ve made a small start. All the best with your writing.
